When 25 years flashed by just like that

When 25 years flashed by just like that…maybe you’re not even 25 years old or like my youngest, just turned 25. Time is a funny thing. It would be cliche to say, “it just keep ticking” or “time flies” or “look at the time, gotta go” Please don’t go. This blog won’t bore you with cliches or go on and on about my son who just turned 25. But I must say, I am so proud of him, from the fun little boy he was keeping us on our toes to the godly, talented man he has become still keeping us on our toes to this day! 🙂

They say time is our most precious asset because it is nonrenewable. Once it’s spent, it’s gone. Oh, how intertwined time can be with delight or regret, with absolute glee or gloom. I love how my husband always says, don’t look back; there’s no future in it. To a large degree that is true. I am no history buff but there can be good in looking back to analyze and learn from the past. That’s why it’s a whole subject in school and even a major in college. There is good to reflection. But also, if we stay fixated on a certain problem or fantasy we have framed from the past, it can sink us.

As you think of time, ever felt like some days drag on forever and others go by in a minute? The thing about time is that in one way distant memories feel like a lifetime ago and others like yesterday. What to do about all there is to be done in typically what feels like not enough time? What to do about those 25 years you may wish you could get back some days, or sands in the hourglass you wish hadn’t been there, or the next 25 years you hope to steward so carefully to be sure to squeeze every ounce of love, fun, and meaning out of?

I have been to expensive Franklin Covey Courses. We flew to fancy Scottsdale, AZ when we were broke as all get out to go to them out of desperation in the 90’s. I’ve been part of Masterminds that we paid far more than we really had to pay to try and learn how to live in my top 3%, how to get the most out of life, out of time. I’ve spent untold hours discussing with Kevin, friends, and family about life. Time is the stuff life is made of. Okay, that is cliche but I do love that one.

Here are few observations you may find helpful. We over analyze because we are fearful of misstewarding one minute. Then we waste gobs of time because of pure exhaustion of over analyzing and trying to wring everything we can out of each day. We find ourselves on a rollercoaster of grinding, running to the finish line that isn’t there until we meet our Maker. We (or at least I) go on vacation after reset after retreat after get away after beach day after shopping spree after conference trying to better myself, rest from it all, and figure out how to manipulate this calendar in my favor. What would happen if we embraced TODAY whatever it looks like, whether you are weathering loss, surgery, or trauma. Or whether you are winning like never before in your career, welcoming a new baby or grandababy into the world. Maybe you just got back from your honeymoon that was blissful only to be slapped in the face with reality of life and work and people and disappointments. Whether your future looks scary in your 80s, 50s or 20s.

Whether 25 years flashed by just like that and you are only 25 or not even or double or triple that age, embrace today whatever it looks like. Go with it. Let God use it and trust Him that He will turn it for your good because you love Him being convinced He loves you. This is the day The Lord has made. I will (I choose to. I will to…) rejoice (re-joy) and be glad in it (not mad in it or sad in it).

What if we took this approach from a place of childlike faith as my oldest used to say when he was little? “It’s okay Mommy, remember what you taught me…I do my best and God does the rest.” Ahhhhh, there is so much peace in that because there is so much faith in it.

See, I told you there is good to reflection. That reflection of one son’s wise words will help me process the other one’s 25 years flashing by just like that as we’ve been celebrating him this past week and trusting God with all those years I did my best to pour into my boys and to trust Him with today as that part of my life has changed to look very differently. If you are in a transition time of becoming a new mom or new wife or new employee or new empty nester, embrace today and trust Him to make it beautiful.

Happy Monday!
