Is this the question ringing in your head? Why is this not working? Is that question fueling anxiety or sadness or comparison or wrestlesness?
Acts 2:42 describes the early church by telling us, “They devoted themselves…”
May I echo my husband’s preaching yesterday at Harvest Church by proposing to you that maybe why your kids are giving you a run for your money or why your employees are being impossible to lead or…you fill in the blank…is because THEY gotta devote THEMSELVES?! You can’t do it for them.
Who knew that basically “You can lead a horse to water but can’t make em drink” is all but in the Bible?! Does that make God a Cowboy? I digress. The point is this. What area are YOU not devoting yourself? That is most likely the same area you are worrying over what is NOT working. Maybe not. Maybe it’s an area someone else isn’t devoting themselves and you need to let go, realizing you can only devote YOURSELF. They gotta devote their own self. (That had a southern twang to it if you could hear it.)
Seriously, I pray this brings you freedom from anxiety and whatever you are wrestling with. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong or the lack or the loss, focus on what YOUR next step is in devoting YOURSELF. They gotta do them. Only you can do you. And your happiness doesn’t need to hang on theirs! Paul said he knew how to abound and how to be abased. The world calls it stoicism. The Bible calls it unwavering faith. I call it happy ANYWAY!
So if things aren’t quite how you wish they were, God specializes in impossibilities. He promised to turn things around for our good. Happy people trust in the Lord. (Ps. 40:4)
