OBEY NOW, UNDERSTAND LATER

Think about a situation you are in right now where you’re having a hard time trusting God with.

We sounded like a broken record. We said this so many times when our boys were young. Obey now. Understand later. We tried to teach them that there would be occasions when we may not have time to explain. If that’s the case, it’s important to trust us, as parents, and trust in the fact that we have their best interests in mind. We would tell them to obey immediately, and ask questions later, if need be.

We tried to tell our kids “why” when we could. We did not want to leave things at the level of “because we said so!”

We reserved the “because we said so” card for the rare times that they simply needed to obey now and understand later. Our hopes in parenting this principle were that, when they got older, they would have this kind of trust and respect for their teachers and, later, employers.

There is a general lack of respect for authority these days that needs to be restored because there are times at work, in church, and in life that this mindset is needed. I see this thought process being effective in a family setting, especially so, now that the boys are older. The way it plays out now, with us as a family, is that we trust each other and believe the best when there are things we don’t understand.

Because this has been part of the culture of our family, it’s natural to be patient and realize that maybe there is just something we aren’t understanding about a situation, rather than going straight to assuming the worst.

Hebrews 11:8 tells us how Abraham obeyed without understanding or knowing where he was going.

Numbers 13:31-33 tells how scary it was to obey God when the odds were stacked against them and everyone was talking about how impossible it looked.

If you are feeling between a rock and a hard place right now, trust and obey!! And ask questions later. God is a God who will not leave you hanging! He’s never failed me yet and it’s not about to be the first time! How about you?

Won’t you join me in obeying now and understanding later. Think of a situation like this you’re in right now and make a solid choice today to trust God with it and I guarantee you, He will make way more out of it than you can!

Happy Monday!

Adrienne
